An initial architecture brief for a useful first conversation
An initial architecture enquiry does not need to resolve the whole commission. It does need to place the project so the next conversation is useful and can reveal what is still unknown.
Project type
Residential, interiors, renovation and commercial work open different questions. Allow an open option when a project crosses categories.
Space status
Ask whether a space, drawings or an early idea already exists. That changes the starting point but does not determine the final service.
Tentative scope
Collect which areas might be involved and which decisions remain open. Separate confirmed facts from the person's estimates.
Timing and constraints
Ask for an indicative window and relevant constraints. Do not turn a desired date into a studio commitment.
Purpose of the call
Summarise the context and propose a first conversation to clarify scope and process. Pricing and proposals require further review.
Example to adapt
‘A [type] project in [general location]. Current situation: [description]. I may need work on [tentative scope] and would like to discuss [goal] around [desired timeframe].’ This is a starting point, not a quote.
Final check
An architecture team should adapt this guide to its own process, qualifications and local requirements before using it with clients.
